Cemeteries

The township consists of three cemeteries: Indian Valley Cemetery, Mount Tabor Cemetery, and Smith Cemetery

For more information on each cemetery, click the links in the above paragraph, the photos below or use the menu to navigate. Each cemetery page has information regarding who lies at rest, history and location.

Attention Funeral Homes, per section 3.4 of our Cemetery Rules, we need to be contacted for each service conducted at the cemeteries. The whole of Section 3 will explain why. For the most up to date contact information, please refer to the Township Officers link on Warren County Iowa Auditor page. You may also send an email to: Squaw Creek Township which is then forwarded to each member of the board.

We are currently in the process of researching the occupants of each cemetery to make sure we have accurate information recorded and markers placed where necessary. As you look at the information we have provided in each of the cemetery pages, most notably the Cemetery Burial Information - as known by the Trustees of Squaw Creek Township and the Cemetery Map - as known by the Trustees of Squaw Creek Township, if you find anything you feel needs corrected or addressed, please contact us at Squaw Creek Township . If you don't find this information on the specific cemetery page, it is because we do not have it researched to a point we feel comfortable in sharing. We would welcome any information to assist us with this research.

In regards to needing markers, we require permanent markers for historical purposes as well as for knowing who is buried where. We have several temporary funeral home markers in our cemeteries, which unfortunately can be moved, stolen or even deteriorate in Iowa weather conditions. In some cases, we do have the locations documented as being sold, however if for some reason our documentation is lost or destroyed or a temporary marker is moved or completely removed, we have the potential of selling a plot to someone else finding out later that the plot is already filled. If you are a relative of those without stones, please see our Cemetery Rules for more information on what those markings must contain, sizes, placement, etc. and contact us at Squaw Creek Township to to let us know your plans on providing your relative the opportunity to be recognized by others who visit.

Speaking of documentation regarding sale of plots, we for whatever reason, do not have records of plot sales for many of the persons listed in our above mentioned research. We are continuing our research and we are also moving forward with creating a process to make sure records are accurate and accessible. In the meantime, if you have documentation relating to interment rights, deeds, burial rights, such as for yourself or other family members in any of our cemeteries, we would like for you to contact us at Squaw Creek Township to arrange getting a copy to us as it would help us with our research and if future interments are necessary, it will make it easier for you and your family members in a time when emotions are high and tasks are many.

Each year a request for a proclamation to make the month of May Cemetery Appreciation Month is submitted to the Governor. This is the Proclamation for May 2020.
